Tawa'ovi

Tawa’ovi is an emerging planned community on the Hopi Tribe reservation, encompassing approximately 8,850 acres in Range Unit 351 (BIA 4), about 17 miles north of the Hopi Cultural Center, with a 500-acre Planned Community District that includes designated industrial uses such as solid waste. Long identified by the Hopi Tribe as its most advanced project to meet critical needs for housing and government facilities, Tawa’ovi builds on a 2005 community development plan with completed NEPA compliance, significant water and sewer infrastructure investments made since 2020, and over $3 million in CARES Act improvements. Recent momentum includes a $2 million award from the Arizona Department of Housing to construct new affordable rental housing, alongside a partnership with the University of Arizona to pursue innovative, sustainable design concepts through the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Design Challenge—positioning Tawa’ovi as a growing model for sustainable, culturally grounded community development.
