Addressing the Bennett Freeze and Forced Relocation

Joint Village Strategic Planning

Stemming from the Navajo/Hopi Land Dispute, two separate episodes of Hopi/US history have severely impacted the living conditions for three Hopi villages/communities: Upper Moenkopi Village, the Village of Moencopi (Lower), and Yuwehloo Pahki Community.

The impacts of the Navajo-Hopi Land Dispute have never been fully resolved.

The Joint Village Strategic Planning approach updates work that the Hopi Tribe did back in 2010 and frames the future of these portions of Hopi in a positive economic development context. That is, with the proper investment by the federal government in housing, infrastructure, public facilities, and economic development, Hopi has a bright and sustainable future. It is time to make that investment. On June 23, 2021, the Hopi Tribal Council unanimously approved a resolution of support for this initiative.
